I found it interesting that the house, among many other inanimate objects, is personified throughout the story. In the story, the house is living and continuing to run its daily errands as if the family is still there and going about their daily activities. Why would anyone ever watch the news to check the weather when you could simply ask Siri, Google, or Alexa? Relying completely on technology may not be in our near future, but with its convenience and ability to do our work effortlessly for us, it may exist sooner than we think. I know that I personally depend on my phone to wake me up in the morning and figure out what the names of the main actors are in different movies and TV shows (although the second one is not as important).Īnother example of increasing dependence on technology could also be anything that can use voice commands. We have become more dependent on our phones to know information, like our friends’ and family's contact information, and do other actions similar to the house in the story.

It seems a little ridiculous to me that society would depend on technology so heavily, even though people have grown very attached to smartphones in recent years. The technology is very advanced, similar to the technology in “The Veldt,” where everything in the house is done automatically and its occupants don’t do very much if anything at all. It is crazy to think that the year this story takes place in is only less than 7 years away. “There Will Come Soft Rains” is a short story that takes places in the future (2026 to be exact). So knowing Bradbury, before reading the stories this week, I was prepared for something interesting. I thought the book was very interesting how it brought a vision of how the future could be or even an alternate reality. I remembered that this story took place in a futuristic world where firefighters started fires instead of extinguishing them.
